Exactly. I never see people actually liking Cinnamon as a DE, but everyone keeps recommending Mint. It’s so frustrating, and perplexing.

The idea is that someone is checking the code. And by building it yourself, you can at least ensure that you’re getting what’s built from the code. It is possible that some malicious stuff was inserted while building the binary that doesn’t show up in the source code. Building from source solves that problem.
Reproducible builds try to solve that problem by generating some provenance from a third party. A middle ground can be building the binary using something like GitHub Actions, since that can be audited by others. That comes with its own can of worms since GH is owned by M$, but I digress.
So it is technically sane to do it, just not very practical in my view. But for lesser known apps, I do sometimes build from source.
I mean, that’s not a Rust issue per se. It’s only noticeable because
cargois much better than most build systems, and hence is an actual option for distribution of software. But there should ideally always be a binary distribution. I know some people like to build everything by themselves, but I get it, it’s annoying.

6·1 month agoThat’s the main reason I switched to Navidrome and downloaded a ton of flacs. No one’s stopping me from drinking whiskey in the bathtub listening to sad music during my monthly breakdown.
Yeah, that’s the unrealistic part. The sister would’ve known how he is and asker her kid not to bother uncle.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Quitting Spotify for NavidromeEnglish
81·2 months agoSymfonium is great, and in its current state, probably the best Subsonic client for android. (Tempus is good enough for me though.) But best of luck if you ever have a nontrivial issue and ask the dev for help. That’s one abrasive mf. (Just take a look here. It’s hard to find anyone so full of themselves.)
That said, if it works for your needs, it’s a great app. I won’t judge anyone for using it, but I’m someone who can’t and won’t separate the art from its artist. If that applies to you, you’ve been warned.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•How many of you are non-native English speakers?
3·2 months agoI don’t know how good my English is, but it’s my third language. Bengali and Hindi are my first two. I speak a couple more languages closely related to these (e.g. Urdu, Punjabi, Assamese, Odia, Sanskrit etc. Also been trying to learn French). But I can’t read or write in them.
I learnt English from two sources. My reading and writing abilities mostly come from school. I had some pretty good teachers, who encouraged reading newspapers to learn English. At least in my case, it really helped.
When it comes to speaking and understanding spoken English (with all its irregularities due to accents and whatnot), watching movies and cartoons helped. I used to download and watch all kinds of movies during high school, possibly some that I shouldn’t have watched at that age. My love for movies is basically what made me somewhat competent in the spoken aspect of English. (It also got me into piracy, and ultimately into FOSS, so I guess I owe a lot to the great directors whose movies were hard to find legally lol.)
Yeah.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Do you guys know people who are awful human beings, but end up being super attractive, smart and loved by everyone they seem, but you can see through their bullshit and don't like them?
16·2 months agoDue to my father being a student leader in his youth, and later a local socialist party worker, I happen to know quite a few Indian politicians. I know people both from the left, and the right, and more than 90% of them are awful manipulative bastards. That’s the main reason I decided not to be active in the party. Even though I support their on-paper agenda, I just loathe the leadership, and don’t have the patience or the will to work with them. I still go to their events whenever I’m in India, like fundraisers and stuff, but I try to avoid the leadership. Fuckers make my skin crawl.
Edit: All the people talking about therapy in the other comments probably mean well, but not everything can (or needs to) be solved by therapy. I think this is one of the negative aspects of therapy when its hyper focused on individuals. This sort of idea that everyone should try to change themselves, instead of critiquing the society is what’s got us into this individualistic hellhole. Sure, go ahead and disconnect from these people, or learn to ignore them and be happy; but these people are still there, and they often have real power over us. You can ignore them, until you can’t; that’s how we get people like Trump.
This is even more apparent with the online Indian hate. It’s so manufactured. Especially on Instagram, that place is a hell hole.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What are some of your favorite digital tools?
2·2 months agoAssuming you mean Navidrome, it offers more control over transcoding, has broader support, and has smart playlists. Also, I just like that it’s a separate service. I don’t like keeping all my eggs in the same basket.
When it comes to Symfonium, I just find the dev to be extremely annoying. I bought a license for it, and used to use it with Navidrome. But when I encountered some issues, the dev was unhelpful, and downright abusive. So, I decided to find something that’s FOSS, and Tempus fits the bill.

7·3 months agoYeah, if you want me to hear your endless bitching, you at least need to invite me for drinks (or potluck, if you don’t drink) sometimes. Even then, I might just offer some advice every once in a while. A little bit of tough love is sometimes necessary.

1911·3 months agoThis just reeks of right wing anti-intellectualism. People actually offering solutions are vilified because they’re sometimes rude or annoying. Grow up, and learn to ignore people you want to ignore. Not everyone will bow down to your whims. You wanna complain, fine, some will respond with solutions. If you don’t want that, ignore them. It’s not very hard.
