One of my first jobs was in a call center with a scripted greeting using an assertive voice because the customers always tried to dunk on us. My friends and family would laugh so hard when I answered my personal phone with the script/voice.

51·2 days agoFair point. If you’re already spending $555 to watch a movie, what’s another $150 for all of it?
I guess my thought was that if my time is worth money, would it be worth my extra time/money to watch the extra bits over say, attending to other aspects of my life? Does the extra footage really enhance the overall viewing pleasure? If I recall one of the scenes was a tree getting high with Gandalf? I don’t remember, it’s why I’m asking.

103·2 days agoLet’s say you had to pay the TV $1/minute to watch LOTR. Is the extended cut worth $30-$50 more per movie than the theatrical cut?
I wouldn’t pay the extra but I’m not the biggest fan. It’s been years so I don’t recall all the things the extended cut adds. Just curious what fans would say in this economy.
Yeah, I have SO many rescue animals, it’s hard to explain to normal people. Multiple dogs with all sorts of problems, a few parrots, an angry hedgehog, two cats, and my vet’s first call to foster (almost anything). They are all well taken care of and clean but there’s a… smell.
I’m also holding Balthazar, a bark scorpion, against his will for invading Pretty Kitty Pepper’s land. Balthazar is kept well and fed a steady diet of pinheads. When he eats, it looks like a dot matrix printer in reverse. That’s the one creature in the house most people freak out about the most, but they would all be wise to fear the parrots.
Pretty Kitty Pepper for reference

I’m diagnosed dyslexic which, when reading aloud, sends me into a stutter to full embarrassed apologies. When reading to myself, I’ll make it 10 pages before I realize I didn’t read shit. I’m never getting laid in your hypothetical world.
Who am I kidding? I’m not getting laid as is.
The one that was like 10m long 😆 I’m assuming that’s the album one.
I used to study in a cozy little cafe that was a row of houses turned into business. Next door was a bar that could get a bit rowdy sometimes. They had one of those jukeboxes with an app. I would load up Hotel California every chance I got. I could barely hear the music but I could hear the patrons groan every 30 minutes or so. One day the song option wasn’t there, so I switched to American Pie by Don McLean.
I’m sure they hated me.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What was hacking like in the '80s and '90s?
12·28 days agoAt my fist big boy job my dad sent me one that locked out my keyboard and mouse then cranked the volume to 100% as it yelled “hey everyone, I’m watching porno over here” followed by a super loud moan. It was a quiet call center too. That moment still haunts my dreams.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What was hacking like in the '80s and '90s?
11·28 days agoIn the 90’s, companies were super lax on data security, retention, and destruction. In my city we had major IT players like INTEL, HP, Motorola, etc. We would dumpster dive and find whole computers full of data and no passwords. We were after the hardware so all our friends could play Doom MP, Quake, or later Unreal Tournament… so we usually wiped them but who knows what was in those things. It was a lot of e-waste and because of divers with bad intentions, now there’s incredibly strict corporate rules about data security/destruction.
Yeah, what’s that about? Events like The Hunt and I’m completely locked out. Sober just puts a “totally normal, Roblox did this, and we’re sorry” message up but I’ve never know the why.
I play Roblox with my son using Linux. The program is called Sober and it’s more than fine, it’s free, and updated regularly when Roblox security/program updates.

Programmer Humor@lemmy.ml•POV: The highest paid engineer at your company gets fired
9·1 month agoI know you didn’t ask and this is just anecdotal evidence from my employer, but the people who tried to reverse engineer this guys work were given strict deadlines they never met. Pen testers to straight up turnaround kings, this guy buried them all and had to be bought out. It was cheaper to buy him out than it was to pursue the next step. Stay safe my friend, stay valuable.

21·1 month agoWe recently had to buy out a director that kept all the technical knowledge to themselves for the last 20 years. They were almost always available 24x7 for outage calls and it became clear his teams didn’t know shit about anything, especially when said director was sick or on vacation. He was labeled a danger to the infrastructure and settled for a multimillion dollar buyout with a full knowledge transfer. Retirement age, fat 401k, company stock and other investments… yeah, he took that deal immediately, like no hesitation.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Anyone else think Reddit mods are using shadow bans to limit dissenting opinions?
13·1 month ago16 year Reddit account, so much content given to them over the years, perma banned for hate speak a few days ago. Apparently saying people should support all innocent civilians (especially the children via PCRF) and make food and support flow… is hate speak. Fucking bootlicking cowards. I’m glad I got banned, fuck new Reddit.

I had an ex that asked me to show her how to cook and then proceeded to have a complete mental breakdown while screaming about how judgy I was being.
Turns out she lived off of turkey on flatbread, plain, every.single.night. We didn’t make it more than a month. My (now) wife went from only being able to bake, to a full on Sous Chef. Most nights I don’t have to say a word, we’re just on a mission to get dinner for 5 ready.
