I spent a few days ago hunting for a EC2 service that I was being charged for. The AWS budget said it came from “EC2 Services” which yeah, could mean anything.
Started by typing EC2 then clicking every single tab to find what was turned on. I finally found the service because there was a region filter, that let me find out that I was using a EBS that I left activated when I was goofing around in another region.

The nonprofit i worked for spent 80% of their time and energy just for funding. Like $2mil a year, and 1.6mil went to paying staff.
Sometimes jobs frame it to look like it’s a positive.
I worked at one company that “gave opportunities” to offshore engineers because they were a fraction the cost of Americans.
Another company outsourced our graphic design to people on Fiverr to help fund “freelancers”, and then repurpose the work for million dollar ad campaigns.
And for me, I just constantly think of what the line is and how much of it I can cross to feed my kids.

Maybe it’s written that way to protect the privacy/trade secrets. But it also makes it hard to have any takeaways beyond why a dev team approved of pushing code like this to prod with minimal testing.
