  • Does an old school washer dryer that runs off timer relays / knobs / push buttons really have a CPU?

Nope, it’s just a timer-drive. cam triggering switches. The physical cam IS the CPU.

We have reached a point in time where there are adults who think everything that runs through multiple steps must have a microcontroller, because only really really old machines* do without.

*For the most part. I bought a brand new whirlpool dryer late last year, and it has a mechanical timer in it.

  • I live in Oklahoma, drive an Old Green Truck™, have a lazy dog of unknown breed, and I work in a machine shop. Last week my neighbor and I rebuilt a motorcycle engine and put it in his bike. My wife and I have chickens. I’m a pretty sterotypical “redneck”.

I’ve voted democrat in every election since 2000.

It sounds like OP is terribly confused, and is associating people from two different groups while they really have nothing in common, which is something MAGA dipshits also do.

  • I wish I could get my head around programming. I’ve tried learning from books, I’ve tried learning from codecademy, and all I can do is follow the lessons, I don’t understand how I’m supposed to turn all these lines of gibberish into a program that does something. The most common bit of advice I get is “Just make up a project! Find something that you want the computer to do, it’s easy and fun!” And I’m over here like… “OK, how?” It’s like someone pointing to a pile of metal and a welder and saying “Build something!” Sure, someone who knows how to weld can do that, but most people are going to need more information.
