I feel like your right about complacency playing a big part.
It does make me wonder if a user of both MacOS and Windows would be more willing to consider using Linux over individuals who have only used Windows. Maybe someone who has used multiple operating systems would be more aware of what could be improved in their computing experience.
That said a lot of people seem to be migrating to Linux because of Windows 11
It is a niche open source social network. I feel like having enthusiastic Linux users is inevitable.

Are you trying to import content? I don’t think there’s a way to do that. There might be a way to mass download content posted by a user but I feel like that’s probably it. I don’t even know if there is a tool for doing what I mentioned for Lemmy.

I suppose that makes sense. I feel like that might lead to a lot of unnecessary reports. Like if one instance doesn’t allow right-wing or NSFW content but federates with one that does. If a user reports it then the other community/instance is going to hear about it. It’s easy to ignore but legitimate reports might get swept up with them.
I wish guides about cracking DRM for legally purchased content were more popular
There should almost be a “buy a license to…” distinction like how some games are free versus free to play.

On top of the privacy aspect I feel like this must be really easy to bypass with a minimum amount of effort.
