Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•English as a second language learners: what words were really hard for you to pronounce?
41·1 month agoIs it tricky? English is my first language and it doesn’t seem difficult to me, but I never gave it much thought. So fascinating.

memes@lemmy.world•Gender reveal parties should be done at 16 years not 16 weeks
4·2 months agoHere’s Grammar.com saying the same: https://www.grammar.com/usage_and_difference:_till,_until,_'til (you have to copy/paste the entire link - Lemmy is fighting me on the URL format).
There are plenty of non-dictionary linguistic sources out there that corroborate, but I’m not going to waste my time spoon feeding them to you when clearly you’re incapable of admitting when you’re wrong. “Till” is not an abbreviation. You made that assertion up all on your own. And I’m certainly not going to trust someone who doesn’t even know when it’s proper to capitalize words.

16·2 months agoI used to think that as well, but this is also standard usage: https://www.merriam-webster.com/grammar/should-you-use-until-or-till-or-til

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What is “cheese” called in your language?
6·8 months agoI shall start calling mine Sir Cheese.
There’s an Italian restaurant in Denver (Gaetano’s) that was opened in the 40s to give the mob wives something to keep them busy and to launder money. The mob is long gone, but the restaurant is still pretty popular.

memes@lemmy.world•I Wonder What They Will Answer To A Question Like This
2·11 months agoGo read the news yourself then. It’s all out there. People have lost access to health benefits, water hygiene standards are being relaxed, critical cybersecurity initiatives are being cut, national parks will be less accessible to all (some of Colorado’s have already announced they’ll be closed two days a week), the impacts are both immediate and longer term, and far reaching. If you want to hear about immediate direct impact, a critical domestic violence center in Colorado that has been providing cross-departmental case management and victim advocacy since 2016 will likely have to shut down because its federal funding was cut by DOGE and victims are currently being turned away. The immediate, very real, impacts are EASY to discover with a minimal amount of research effort. The larger ones are just starting to make themselves known.

6·11 months agoYeah, there may be more that hadn’t made the published list yet. sigh Hard to keep up…
ETA: I don’t think the IRS is on there either. DOGE is cutting their funding too.
