Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Why hasn't Euro become the default global reserve currency yet?English
8·2 days agoOnly one oil country switched to Euros and an invasion switched it back to dollars.
A lot of the international banking structure was built on American systems of banking, so the dollar got baked into a lot.
Until Trump, the dollar was generally seen as more stable given its longevity and being the currency of the largest superpower.
Also, compared to the Euro and Yuan, the American dollar has an internal hedge when it comes to energy prices given that the USA can supply most of its energy needs by itself. It is hard to handle an oil shock when the currency’s value drops because the internal market can’t afford oil.

3·3 days agoThere is usually some guidance, although the regulations are usually written with more wiggle room than structural standards because of varying site conditions.
However, the hill causing an increase to the speed of the car and that the area has a known pedestrian draw to it would tip the scales more towards installing a stop sign.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•How can I wear a skirt at work if I'm not religious?English
1·6 days agoIt depends on what job it is. I don’t see a bank having a problem with it unless they have a uniform. If you were doing any field or machine work, I could see a safety issue.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Why are portion sizes in the US big?English
1·7 days agoNo, but it is more a sign of what a restaurant or store will focus on. If the raw ingredients are of lower costs than rent and labor, it may make more sense to provide more food.
For restaurant culture in the USA, there is generally a focus on large portions, free tap water, few courses, and turning tables over quickly. A lot of early fast food chains were effectively food factories, skimping out in rent and reducing labor costs because those are the major costs.

2·7 days agoThere can still be value in some old things like maintaining old equipment or preserving old media. The demand may have collapsed, but it didn’t collapse to zero.

84·7 days agoFood is relatively cheap in the USA compared to other countries. You also had a lot of immigrant waves come to the USA, find that food was so cheap, and celebrated by creating larger meals.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Why doesn't the United States have universal healthcare by now? (Serious)English
1·8 days agoI know of the Working Families Party and that party has had some success either winning their own election or running as Democrats.
A major job of a political party is to organize. If a party can’t organize while other ones can, maybe I shouldn’t support the party which can’t organize.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Why doesn't the United States have universal healthcare by now? (Serious)English
5·8 days agoThere isn’t an organized group for it, but there are organized groups against it.
The two attempts to do so, in 1993 and 2009, saw little organized political activity in favor of creating a single payer system while there was organized political resistance against it.
If politicians lose their seats trying to support a single payer system, they won’t be around after the next election.

51·17 days agoI wouldn’t because it is going to get misinterpreted by others. Trump supporters would argue that you’re defending the existing Iranian government.
Someone else suggested an upsidedown American flag, which feels appropriate.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Why do people at the bottle return act like they've never seen a aluminum can before?English
2·19 days agoThere is a weird part of the human brain where there is a slight reset when entering a new room, probably to survey the new place for something that will kill you. It is the reason why people forget what they are doing when they go into another room.
In public, it is really annoying as there are people behind that person during their reset.

God yes.
