  • In my early years, I was offered ether once. And I’ve never seen nor heard from it since (granted, I never really tried to find it)… but it was probably one of the rarer substances I’ve crossed paths with

When I first read Fear and Loathing, that quote stuck out a bit for me. I could see it; how easy those depths could be found (and completely forgotten). I’ve done my fair share of Xanax-over-indulgence in the past, but even that didn’t fully compare.

Xanax is over and done when you’ve lost yourself; there’s no memory coming back. Ether keeps downing you while you’re constantly coming back, and it becomes a hell of a rollercoaster. Like a fever-dream type thing — it is not something I could imagine publicly-indulging on… let alone, doing that while tripping, fucking hell!

So that quote rang a little true to me. I’d wager there really is nothing ‘more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge’, especially when compounding with other chemicals. I literally couldn’t imagine… and kinda glad I never found out lol. God speed for anyone testing those waters

Incomprehension of fraction to decimal conversion is why 90% of people who say they are bad at math, say they are bad at math

I feel called out. I was in high-school Calculus (11th grade) before I “truly” understood fractions. Like, I honestly somehow managed to make it to Calculus without knowing how to add and subtract fractions without a calculator. Thought I was dumb in math until 9th grade algebra, and didn’t start becoming a bit of a math nerd until Calculus

  • She leaned forward, turned off the monitor, then turned it back on. “I did this 10 times already, and its still not working”.

And this is why I couldn’t work in IT support; I just don’t have the patience for certain things. I always love teaching people new things, but most people don’t care when it comes to computers; they just want it to work effortlessly even when they’re the one screwing it up.

And especially working on-site! Oh my life, I bet there’s that same few people… just constantly failing to even try lmao

  • I hear ya, and appreciate the info because I didn’t know that. I was saying that I would do both before calling, and then again when they asked me

But this was back in like 2004-ish, so I’m not sure what was best practice back then. I would just try it all before calling lol… going so far as to shut down and unplug for a few seconds or more

  • As someone who has been asked to restart the computer, even though I already did that before calling IT support… I internally sigh, but begrudgingly do it again just to appease their process. Because I assume plenty of people don’t do it and make y’alls life a tiny bit harder, when a restart would’ve fixed it

Also, how many are solved by making sure the power cable is not just plugged into the wall, but seated into the back of the computer as well?

  • I’ll admit it, though I’m not proud of it. I used to throw trash out the car window all of the time when I was in highschool (idk if I thought it was funny, or I was being cool, or just truly didn’t consider it). It hurts to think about my dumbass doing that in the past, but it happened

Now I don’t even throw my cigarette butts on the ground. I twist them out and put them in my pocket until I can find a proper trash can. I pick up other litter when I can and even raked an entire campsite of beer cans/trash thrown around (I was just hiking and stumbled upon it, but I couldn’t leave it without doing something). So hopefully I’ve earned a little good-litter-karma back for all the fuckery I caused as a dumb teen

    Regarding the snoring:

I snore like a freight train… a real “rattle the walls” type thing. It doesn’t bother me cause I don’t notice lol. Unfortunately, my wife is apperently “unable” to ignore it (I mean that sarcastically about her; my snoring can be/often is impressively loud)

I tried taping my mouth for snoring, but ended up choking on my own saliva. Works for some, not for me

But I went and got a sleep study done (that you can do at home, with equipment they loan you) because I didn’t want to do that to my wife (and I guess there’s health benefits too). Surprisingly, I was diagnosed as having only “mild” sleep apnea. As loud as my snoring (allegedly) can be; I thought it would be worse. So I was prescribed a CPAP and got my machine… mainly because I didn’t want to force my wife into another room 3x a week, due to my obnoxious snoring

And holy shit… I hadn’t slept so well, in so long, that it made me feel a little sad/stupid that I hadn’t gotten a CPAP sooner. You have to find a set-up that works for your sleeping habits… but my god! I hate going without it now. Sometimes I forget to put it on, and sometimes I rip it off at night… but I can always feel how unrested I am now when I don’t wear it

TL;DR - CPAP’s are awesome and worth any mild inconvenience they may cause. And they also stop the snoring, regardless of cause. It’s an inflammation/soft palate thing; sometimes you need a little extra pressure. The sleep you get is priceless though

And not grab me an extra muffin or something to eat for breakfast…

Grab an extra plate for a bro if you gonna be awake that early anyway! You know you’re gonna need my ass to get everyone’s collective shit together at 1am, so we can all get back safely; why the disrespect for us “late wake’s”?

    Inflation vs income

Income hasn’t kept up with inflation, so you have a widening gap

The prices may be proportional, but the average “purchasing power” has decreased. Most family units have more than a single income now, but they still struggle.

Inflation goes up (which devalues our income), but our wages have gone up much slower… so we have a widening gap of “purchasing power” that people’s budget can feel

The “prices” may be proportional, but the ability to afford them is certainly not

  • Thank you! I was reading the wiki about the “landing” and could “understand” how a current phone would be vastly more than sufficient. I got lost trying to find how an “ESP32” was designed… and then how processor’s were (normally) designed nowadays… and how it all worked together. I guess I was asking if a single “chip” could include all of those things (CPU, RAM, ROM), or if it was multiple “chips”. An integrated circuit is what I think I was trying to dissect. I’m still curious about the inter-workings, but you cleared a whole lot up for me.

I really appreciate the breakdown, because I didn’t have the terminology to properly search. I guess it still kinda blows my mind how far it’s all progressed

Edit: And now I’m learning the difference between “Integrated circuit” and “circuit board”… seems silly in hindsight, but the terminology had me a bit confused. Super cool, nonetheless.

  • So I’m not an IT professional by any means, it’s a hobby. But I’m curious if an ESP32 could land a man on the moon. I searched around a bit and am under the assumption that an ESP32 has a CPU or microprocessor of some sort.

What I’m trying to figure out is: Would a processor on an ESP32 have RAM and ROM built into the chip. I hope I’m asking the right questions.

It seems like a processor should have RAM for a cache. But I gave up trying to figure out if it would also have built-in ROM (specifically, an ESP32’s processor)

Do all CPU’s/microprocessors now have SRAM for a cache? Do all also contain ROM? Or is it separate? I guess an ESP32 does require ROM for it’s firmware, regardless? And (maybe?) SRAM in it’s processor?

I’m beinginng to think an ESP32 would have the “specs” to land a man on the moon?

Idk, “how true is your statement” is what I’m trying to figure out (but I lack a lot of the technical knowledge), and now I’m curious. If someone could ELI9, I’d appreciate it

Edit: I did flash the eeprom on some XBOX TSOP chips in the past. So maybe ROM isn’t part of the CPU, but very near-and-dear. Annnnd I’m in a rabbit hold about the anatomy of CPU’s because of a one sentence comment. Please help
