When i was around 14 or 15, I helped do the web dev stuff for an online friend of mine who started a Minecraft server hosting company (he was a few years older than me)
It actually got pretty popular and while I just got paid in free server hosting, I was having a great time.
He just disappeared one night though which we noticed when the card he used for the bulk server reseller host failed. All the servers we were hosting for people along with the website got shut down and he was nowhere to be found online. I was talking to him pretty much all day every day so it was really weird
Its been nearly 15 years but I still wonder wtf happened to him
Its a nullable field, chill. It’s exactly the same as a Linux distro installer asking for your first name for account setup and the moral outrage is genuinely embarrassing
Edit: not to mention that good system design reduces redundant data. If programs want your birthdate, they’ll either repeatedly ask you or go to a central source. If you don’t want to give out that information, you enter a null value or you put something random. The only difference is now you don’t have to repeatedly do that

linuxmemes@lemmy.world•When the Linux user hears an iOS user say they hate WindowsEnglish
212·1 month agoGiven Google’s current trajectory with Android, I’m not sure the smugness is so warranted unless you either have no phone or you’re one of the few that uses a Linux mobile OS. Also, yes I know Android is based on Linux but that isn’t stopping Google from locking it down as tightly as iOS
Regarding Jellyfin, if the PC you got has an Intel CPU then using Intel QuickSync would actually easily outperform the NVIDIA card for transcoding.
Up until very recently I was using a cheap i3 to power my Jellyfin instance that often has 5+ streams going at a time. (The only reason I upgraded was that I had a friend getting rid of an i7 from the same gen lol)

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Have you ever converted another “normie” to use a federated social media platform ?English
3·1 month agoIt’s sad but I find there’s a legit problem with sexism against women on Lemmy/Piefed. Its too often I see memes posted that are
precariously bordering onboomer/incel humour
Sorry, as an executive of a major company I may have misheard you but did you say “replace half the team with an LLM and then make those remaining pick up the slack”?
It is NOT portable (uses 386 task switching etc), and it probably never will support anything other than AT-harddisks, as that’s all I have :-( - Linux Torvalds (1991)
I’ve never heard of this “Linux” thing but it sounds like it doesn’t support any of them 😤

5·2 months agoI used TWMs for a long time but I eventually switched back to stacking WMs. Its sort of hard to go back but when I was using TWMs, I’d spend more time tweaking things than anything else
I’m very much critical of those topics, but they’re a bit beyond the scope of my initial comment. Just to make it clear, I’m not a centrist nor a Liberal voter. My original point is that the average Canadian LPC voter is not voting out of malice for others but out of a desire for stability (especially now in a time where things are very unstable). For example, a Liberal would generally want existing social support systems like our socialised healthcare to continue being funded at the levels that meet people’s needs but are generally anxious at the idea of funding new similar programs like pharmacare.
Most of these voters also have zero real insight or historical context on geopolitical topics such as neocolinialism and I can say confidently that they’re not thinking about it when voting.
I think it’s all ignorant, misguided and lacks vision but I don’t consider it something that’s worthy of being labeled “bad”.
Sorry, what are you referring to exactly? If it’s the treatment of indigenous peoples in Canada or historical collaboration with the US’ imperialistic wars then I’d agree with you but I know the average Liberal voter isn’t thinking about either of those things. While it’s bad that it’s not on their mind, I wouldn’t call them bad people for it as I would do with enthusiastic supporters of Pierre Poilievre’s CPC
Centrists in Canada are just Liberals and while I disagree with some of their policies, they’re not bad, just status quo. Centrists in the US are undoubtedly bad though because what the hell?
not using fish?

I grew up on source film maker slop but I will take the opportunity to hate on the corporatisation of SFM shitposts. Why the fuck is there skibidi toilet merch? A movie? What the fuck, are they going to make a movie based on Shrekophone? Fucking fuck I want off this ride
XKCD made me aware of the fact that this sorta joke has been going on since way before any of us were born. 23 skidoo is an old trendy phrase that’s made up of two jokes that mean nothing definable on their own
Today’s 67 is 1899’s 23
From the XKCD alt text:
In 1899, people were walking around shouting `23’ at each other and laughing, and confused reporters were writing articles trving to figure out what it meant.
I’m dumb, yeah its just a regular “a” and I have no idea why I thought it was backwards lol

The US is such a backwards place
