In Europe many countries have a mandatory sticker/magnet with a red “A” on white background to signal new drivers. You take it off after 2 years.

There’s no change of “unit” when going from km to m or ml to L, etc. It’s just the next “size” up or down, we immediately know 500m is half a km.
