  • I’ve been using Linux, Mac, and Windows simultaneously for over a long damn time and I say this:

    Mac

Mac terminal is still Linux and you can do Linux things with it. I use homebrew stuff all the time - but mostly just do as your told and you’ll be happier. Also, it really helps if you have a few extra pesos in your pocket. I mostly use little Linux boxes to do Linux things rather than Macs. I use Macs more when Apple has decided they like computers and they work great. I move away when they see something shiny and start to depreciate what I have already bought. I will NEVER forget how bad they screwed me with Aperture. However, the Mac Mini is a great product and I use it for what it’s good at.

    Windows

NT 4 was peak Windows. As far as I’m concerned, there is nothing outside of equipment OS that can’t do. Also, nothing useful added to Windows since then really works as promised. (Unlike Mac) Excel is still as slick as a cat’s ass and they keep making it better. It doesn’t work on other OS platforms as well.

    Linux

It is only for people who love computers. Believe it or not, not everyone does.

  • I know you are joking but I can’t sleep so I will share.

I have seen two huge gasoline explosions and the aftermath of a gas pump explosion.

One was from a cigarette. I didn’t actually see that, but I was sitting in social studies class when the shockwave hit us. It felt like the ceiling pressed down on us. It blew out all the pane glass windows in downtown. This was in the early’80s. Someone who was cleaning a gasoline barge lit a cigarette out of habit. It was like a fuel air bomb going off.

I was a little kid in the early ‘70s when a gasoline truck driver accidentally set his truck on fire by the static from his nylon jacket. It was at night and the explosion woke me up. You could see the fire from everywhere in town.

In the late ‘70s these three dumbasses were stealing gasoline from the filling station where they worked. They were filling 55 gallon drums in a van. It was dark so one of these genuses lit his lighter.

The burned out van was still there in the middle town in the morning. Everyone in the small town drove by to look.

Every annoying safety rule has multiple stories like this behind them.

  • That is a good point.

In my case, I was trying to address the shortcomings of Apple Time Machine. I use a Mac mini as the server I work from on all my machines. Time Machine does the version Managment for me.

I just use Sync Thing through a VPN to keep an offsite backup of content files (not a complete OS restore) and to keep a copy of critical files on my laptop in case I am away from my home network and need to see a file.

I still need to implement a regular air gapped backup instead of the ad-hoc that I have now.
