    In most European countries you need a 4 year university degree in criminology to become a cop. They have the same standards for average police officers as we in North America have for Federal law enforcement. So while it’s certainly true that some European countries have shitty cops, the ones with stricter barriers to entry have slightly less shitty cops.

    Here’s an interactive map although it does seem to be missing a fair bit of data for Europe. The USA has the most abysmal Police training time at just 500 hours of training between being a civilian and being a Police officer.

    edit: lol whoops I never actually posted the link earlier. Here it is: https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/police-training-requirements-by-country

    Guys, it’s not one or the other. We can have trees and algae tanks. Trees can still offer all of the benefits they do like shade and beauty while algae tanks can be used to increase fresh oxygen. Algae is much better at absorbing CO2 than trees and providing clean air which is a big problem in a busy city.

  • TLDW: James Somerton is a gay man and a YouTube content “creator” who has recently been outed as a plagiarist by Hbomberguy and Todd In The Shadows. He primarily steals content from other lesser known queer content creators which just makes his plagiarism all the more insidious.

    He has also strangely been proven to be guilty of spreading pseudohistory in which he changes details of historic events.

    He has also been accused of a Patreon scam by making a (now deleted) video pleading with his subscribers on YouTube that he can’t make ends meet and he’ll have to stop making videos if he doesn’t get more Patreon subscribers. He got 1200 new patrons from that video. He apparently immediately purchased an $8000 camera afterwards which people describe as a “bizarre purchase” for someone who was just in financial dire straits. Also, there was no evidence of him having suffered a drop in subscribers that he claimed was the reason for his financial situation.

    He has also been accused by YouTuber and Nebula creator Jessie Gender of transphobia. She says that James Somerton has gone out of his way to erase any queer content creators who were not cisgender gay men, and that he intentionally misgenders other transgender content creators constantly.

    It seems like the inciting incident for all of these YouTube and Nebula content creators to go after him was James’ application to become a Nebula content creator. I suppose they started gathering evidence to provide against his membership and they ended up finding so much that they created these videos and levied formal accusations.

    Here’s a slightly more in-depth read from Wikitubia for anyone interested in reading further: https://youtube.fandom.com/wiki/James_Somerton#Controversies

    The thing is that if someone is bothering you, then you need to go to the teacher. If you set a precedent that one kid is bothering you, then the teacher is more likely to believe you if you ever snap and hit your bully they’ll be more understanding. But if you never say anything and then suddenly snap, then obviously it looks from the outside like you’re the bully.

    I currently work part-time as a bus driver and I just wanna say that it’s incredibly hard to determine who is right or wrong when you didn’t see what happened and you’re just going by what each kid says. If you only see the tail end of a fight, you might wrongfully think the kid retaliating is the bully. 99% of the time it’s easier to just separate the kids and/or punish them both equally since it’s impossible to determine who the victim and the perpetrator is. It sucks, it feels really bad, but that’s the reality of the situation.

  • It’s not at all necessary, but I find it makes much easier to read code if you instead only use if statements and just return early when you’re in a function. For example, you could check isalpha(letter) == true is true then check letter + key <= 90 do the letter += key; return letter; then since letter + key must be > 90 if it didn’t already return a value, then you can do the while statement and return letter without needing an if statement at all. Then the isalpha(letter) == false is also unncessary, just return letter at the end.

    Like this:

    char rotate(char letter, int key)
    {
      if (isalpha(letter)
      {
        if (letter  + key <= 90)
        {
            letter += key;
            return letter;
        }

        do the while loop here
      }

      return letter;
    }

    Yeah but C makes more sense. 0-10 is cold but not freezing, 10-20 is cool, 20-30 is warm, 30-40 is hot, 40+ is “you’re gonna die of heat exposure! Get inside, what are you doing?!” increasing in urgency with the number. If it’s in the negatives, it’s the same as the 40+ except “cold exposure”.

  • It’s definitely from other instances voting on it. For example. I’m on the @kbin.social instance but I’m commenting on your post from @jeemy.jeena.net

    Also, this doesn’t really have to do with your point but it’s interesting none-the-less, it’s really hard to keep view count numbers accurate when you’ve got multiple servers involved. The view count is accurate and every view is being counted, but any time you look at it, it’s not exactly correct. If you think about how each server might get a view count update from the server at different times, and then add the views that only it sees to the view count, and then when it goes to add it’s view counts to the central count and get a new updated number there may have been dozens of other server that have updated the view count at various times between then and now.

    It all gets very complicated but I think it’s kind of neat that a view count number can be accurately kept track of and yet every time you look at it, it’s not exactly correct.

  • I see other people have posted good explanations, but I think the simplest explanation has to do with how you break down numbers. Lets take a number, say, 124. We can rewrite it as 100 + 20 + 4 and we can rewrite that as 1 * 10^2 + 2 * 10^1 + 4 * 10^0 and I think you can see why anything raised to the 0th power has to equal 1. Numbers and math wouldn’t work if it didn’t.

    Unfortunately this doesn’t really faze Christians at all because many of them believe that God is the source of all that is good, and so by default anyone who worships God is also good by default, and of course this logic follows that anyone that doesn’t worship God is evil by default.

    Also, barring that, just because Satan punishes bad people doesn’t make him good. He punishes bad people because he’s jealous of God’s love for Humans, and he hates them for it. He’s more of an antihero I guess if you really wanted to paint him in a somewhat good light.
