On The Nature Of Mass Movementa, by (I think) Eric Hoffer. One of the things he claims is that mass movements are generally made up of the dispossessed and dissatisfied who want better conditions but are not quite suffering enough that their entire focus is on acquiring food. People have to feel as if they could improve their circumstances by revolting, but not be actively starving.

I heard a story about a guy doing something similar, but it was his internet connection speed and instead of submitting a noise complaint it tweeted at his service provider.

Yeah, it took me a bit to wrap my head around it. It’s worth it to avoid subtle, weird, and hard to diagnose bugs later on.

As a Rust programmer, I approve this message. Tumbling through a turbine repeatedly would be less stressful than working on a large python/js codebase.

Do you think that your assertion, that they want to destroy the world around us in order to provide “value” to a small group of tech bros is at odds with the underlying philosophy of effective altruism? It seems like anyone who wanted to create the most good for the most people would be opposed to a future like that.

Do you really think that’s what effective altruists want?

I didn’t know about the personalized SEO thing- I wonder if you could have a “default SEO rank” that would basically average all the specific uprank/downranks from other users. So power users tweak their algo, and everyone else gets the benefit of using that human feedback to improve their results.

Sweet, we need more non-English programming languages. I’m surprised that existing programming languages haven’t been translated yet.

Not the guy you’re replying to, but I’ve read (and my personal experience confirms) that women in their 30’s have high sex drives, a lot more sexual experience, and are a lot more blunt about what they want. I don’t sleep with guys, but as a guy in my 30’s, this tracks with how I’ve developed as well, so it’s probably more of a 30’s thing than a woman thing.

Normally, when I see something like “C/C++” it means that there’s a significant overlap between the two languages, so knowledge of one implies or coincides with knowledge of the other. But C# and C++ are very different languages, and while you could argue that there’s some sense in which they’re related, it isn’t much of one. If you’re going to list “C#/C++” then you could just as well put “Java/C#”, or “C++/Rust”.
