Heat pumps are not simple at all. They are extremely efficient but can’t produce a large temperature gradient so they need to run very long cycles (potentially remaining on 24 hours straight). Modern cold weather air source heat pumps also tend to have variable output (variable speed compressor, variable speed fan). This demands a more complicated thermostat that adjusts the heat pump up and down, possibly with PWM.
And then there’s the emergency/auxiliary heating from the furnace. The thermostat needs to have some intelligent logic to decide when the heating demand exceeds the capacity of the heat pump and call for the furnace.
I have a heat pump as well as a furnace (for auxiliary heating). The thermostat frustrates the hell out of me! For one thing it loses its date and time (yes it has a full calendar date and time as well as time zone) if there’s even a single second power outage. How hard would it have been to put a CR2032 battery and a diode in there just to run the clock when the power fails?
For another thing, the thermostat itself runs extremely hot. Just putting my hand on it, it feels super warm to the touch. The LCD touchscreen on the other hand has molasses-slow response time. It’s almost impossible to set the temperature on the first try without overshooting by 2 degrees.
Lastly, it is designed to be able to run both the heat pump and the furnace when heating load exceeds the capacity of the heat pump. The thermostat also has a sophisticated time of day temperature set point schedule system (with separate schedules for every day of the week). However, the damn thing does not correctly reconcile these two facts!
I have the system set for cooler temperatures at night and warmer temperatures in the day. When the morning arrives and the schedule hits the higher day time set point, the thermostat suddenly sees a multiple degree deficit vs the set point and then calls for emergency furnace heating because it thinks the heat pump is failing to meet heating demand!
This is so maddening and stupid! Why can’t I have the temperature set point just continuously and cyclically vary throughout the day and night like a sine wave? No, the dumb thing runs the heating and cooling schedule as a square wave and therefore runs the furnace every single morning in order to slam the temperature up by a few degrees to the day time set point instead of gradually ramping it up over several hours with the heat pump…
Admittedly it’s very difficult if you want to maintain consistency but the benefits are enormous!

Ahhh I probably get it over 500 for a big sear. Kinda crazy that my stove’s burner can get there even on medium.
That’s what led me to redoing the seasoning today. I washed up the grease with a few drops of Dawn and the pan came out with large areas of brown/white and dry/powdery rather than black and shiny.
I definitely have had the pan have a really strong seasoning that maintains a hard, glossy black finish even after washing with soap before. I’m hoping the current seasoning holds up a bit better.
I think maybe sometimes I burn the seasoning from cooking with too high heat? I really love to put a good sear on a burger or a steak and I love how cast iron is like a deep cycle battery that can store and release a large amount of heat into a piece of food.
I just reseasoned my 12” Lodge today! A lot of nasty smells coming out as I took off layers and layers of old seasoning with barkeeper’s friend. But now it has a non sticky, glassy smooth new sunflower oil seasoning. Very slick!
Does anyone know how to avoid having bacon foul up the seasoning? Seems like it always reacts chemically and incorporates proteins into the seasoning which make it nasty and dry and flaky rather than smooth and glassy.

One thing I never see people talking about with fossil fuels is that they were a one shot deal in earth’s history, never to be repeated. If global civilization completely collapses (particularly the industrial base) then attempting to start over without fossil fuels could leave us stuck in a 17th century type situation for an extremely long time.
The problem is that renewables just don’t bootstrap. They require huge amounts of minerals which we’ve only been able to mine and process using heavy equipment and manufacturing powered by fossil fuels. Trying to do all that from a minecart-horse-and-pickaxe level of technology isn’t going to work out.
The other major factor is of course all the really easy mineral sources are gone too. Instead of mining directly from the ground we’d be salvaging scrap materials from the mountains of disposable electronics we’re producing right now. That’s where things really start to look like Mad Max.
Was there a time in the past you would have preferred? I grew up in the 90s and I really miss that time period but I don’t think I’d prefer to live at any time before the 20th century over now. As complex and difficult as life is right now, other time periods tended to be much nastier for various reasons.
The whole history of compound interest is quite fascinating. Early arguments for it are that seeds and livestock are capable of reproducing and multiplying themselves. If I lend you a handful of seeds and a year later you give back the exact same size handful, I have lost a whole year’s production I could have gotten out of those seeds.
Furthermore, assuming you actually planted the seeds instead of tucking them away in a drawer somewhere before giving them back later, those seeds produced a crop for you. This crop you could harvest and sell or feed yourself or your family or livestock. You could even save seeds from the harvest and pay me back the handful while keeping even more seeds for yourself. So by lending you seeds interest-free I’m essentially giving you a gift of harvest potential as well even more seeds in the future, at my own expense. Thus is the time value of money.
From this initial seed of an idea grows a huge amount of the financial system.
I would prefer it not be owned by Google as well, though that wouldn’t really change the economics of the situation.

Tomatoes are about 95% water, 1% fibre, and 4% other carbs (sugars and starches). Even with no added sugar, any tomato sauce is basically all carbs and sugar (if you ignore the water).
Even though we think of tomatoes as a vegetable they’re actually a fruit. Eating a whole bunch of tomato sauce is not much different from eating a bunch of pureed strawberries. Tomatoes just don’t taste as sweet as the strawberries because because they’re more acidic.
Especially if you plant open pollinated varieties which are true to seed. So nice being able to save seeds and get more plants next year for free! Doesn’t work with everything but it does work with a lot!
Well you have to be deliberate about it. You need to actually practice the language outside of watching the shows/movies. But the content you’re watching is a strong motivator to continue learning. And then one day you turn the subtitles off!
Oh this is really cool. I didn’t know that! So foreign films brought to Poland are spoken over with a Polish translator, just like you’d have at the UN? That way you can hear the original actors and the translated dialogue in Polish?
How does this work for trying to learn a new language? I have heard of many people learning English by watching English movies and TV shows with subtitles in their own language. This allows them to listen to English and slowly start to pick up English words while still being able to understand what’s happening due to the subtitles. I myself am learning Chinese and I occasionally watch cooking videos in Chinese with English subtitles and find myself gradually picking up the Chinese words as I hear them.
I think this technique probably works best with shows and movies written for children, as those have much simpler dialogue to begin with.
I think they might be computing the derivative of the temperature at time t in real time. When the schedule shifts to a higher set point the derivative goes to positive infinity and the system panics and calls for emergency maximum heat output.
They really ought to compute the temperature set point schedule for the whole day at once and then apply a low pass filter to that.
