  • I know the type. Usually the kind of confident know-it-all who refuses to learn anything but delivers changes really quickly so management loves them. I had the misfortune to fix such a project after that ‘rock-star’ programmer left the company. Unfortunately the lack of professional standards in our industry allows people like that to continuously fail upwards. When I left the project they rehired them and let them design the v2 of the project we just fixed.

I guess for “Flugzeug”, ‘device’ works better but I don’t think I have ever thought about it in that way. From my experience usage usually goes more like this: “Pack dein Zeug zusammen wir gehen weiter.” which I think best translates to ‘Stuff’ or ‘things’. Zeug is an interesting word though. It is also used for the harness of a draft animal (“sich ins Zeug legen”), it’s bridle (“Zaumzeug”), bed linen (“Bettzeug”), work tools (“Werkzeug”) , or as a word for nonsense (“red kein dummes Zeug”). I would say it started, as you said, as a word for device but became a slightly negative word for ‘Stuff’.

  • I looked into Zig because it seemed interesting. I like the idea of a safer C but the compile errors for unused variables pretty much killed my interest the second I encountered them. I could accept this if there was a compiler flag to disable this behaviour but no such flag existed. I have no patience for languages like that so I went back to C++ instead.
