The red circle is helpful for me because Stack Overflow’s UI is garbage. I always read the post, and then read the thing under the post, which is a bunch of nerds nitpicking over TLAs instead of an actual answer. Every time I open that site I forget that the answers are underneath the neckbeards, because it’s so unintuitive.

exocrinous@startrek.websiteto Lord of the memes@midwest.social•seasoning they won't even useEnglish2·1 year agoRed Dwarf has a gag where the crew has a time machine, but have sworn never to use it because of the potential dangers. But then the ship’s curry supply is lost in a flood, and Lister (an average British slob) decides to go back to 20th century Earth for some curry.
Later on in the series they need a tyrannosaurus rex to lose its lunch, so they make a giant curry. The dinosaur loves the curry, and after having its fill it goes for the ship’s supplies of lager and ice cream

exocrinous@startrek.websiteto Lord of the memes@midwest.social•I'm old, Gandalf. I know I don't look it, but I'm beginning to feel it in my heart.English1·1 year agoI disagree. I think anyone can do politics. According to your definition, 10,000 people blocking the streets for a rally isn’t politics. A man self immolating in front of the supreme court isn’t politics. A scientist appearing before the UN to talk about the dangers of climate change isn’t politics. That’s silly. It’s also a circular definition, given a politician is defined as someone who does politics.

I know I don't look it, but I'm beginning to feel it in my heart.English11·1 year agoYou’re talking about cancer breakthroughs like they’re not politics. Cancer breakthroughs are political. The allocation of resources towards particular kinds of research and its payoff is a contentious subject. The breakthrough serves to justify money that has been spent on cancer research. Although critics may say that there’s too much focus on cancer research when other illnesses are more widespread and more pressing. And for that matter, should we be putting more effort into limiting carcinogens in the first place instead of researching cures? An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Maybe I’d prefer the government subsidize induction stoves so that I don’t have to inhale carcinogenic stove fumes and later get my cancer cured in a hospital. That sure sounds like less stress for the patient, and it has the side benefit of improving climate change. Ultimately cancer breakthroughs are a deeply political subject, with a lot of different conflicting opinions on the subject.

We already have a name for that kind of content, it’s news. What do you want to use the word politics for when we already have the word news?

You certainly weren’t using it for anything productive. I believe we should make the word useless for everyone.

Take the correction, move on, and do better next time. Denigrating politics has dangerous consequences.

I tried to read A Game Of Thrones and it was so boring. It didn’t stay with one character long enough for me to get invested in their story. Too many characters, and not enough writing skill to pull that number off.
I think George should have written a few simpler novels to practice good writing before he went and did a big project like this.

exocrinous@startrek.websiteto Programming@programming.dev•Is TypeScript a fad or is my manager delusional?English61·1 year agoThat would be a great solution, because while I love Typescript, I hate compiled web code. One of the coolest things about the internet is that as it’s supposed to work, you can download the source code for any website you go to. It’s open source by design. I hate closed source websites and I hate compiled website code that helps close the source it’s quite a contradiction because typescript is awesome and I recognise that compilation is the only way to get it to run on our web infrastructure. So it would be great if we could just type JavaScript and solve the contradiction that way.

The missile would start having thoughts about becoming the dark lord of mordor and would refuse to go off or land in the volcano. It would land nearby and seek to take over the orc armies.
