People see it as a way to spread awareness about the fediverse alternatives that are out there. Like “hey, if you like this, there’s more where that came from.” It’s not for viewers who are already here, but for those where the post inevitably travels.

I dunno. Both watermarking and being annoyed at the watermarks seem like a waste of energy to me. If people are going to generate content, I’m not going to sass them about how unless it makes something about the content worse (harder to read etc).

    weirdly antisocial

Completely forgets (or ignores) the fact that some people just don’t like their lives and avoiding thinking about it is what helps them get through the day. And that others legitimately have nothing new going on that they can discuss with those outside their inner circles. Like, I’m not going to tell someone I haven’t seen in a couple years all about the adult novel I’m looking forward to releasing in December, or that time I moved and nothing about it went well to the point it was mildly traumatic, so yeah, they’re going to get a “meh, not much. keeping busy. work and stuff. you?” at the most generous.

I got my first one of these when I was 21 and in the best shape of my life. Accidents, injuries, and unpreventable diseases happen, and acting like your comparative good luck means you’ve made better choices than those who have been less lucky by implying they’ve been “unhealthy as hell” is kind of gross.

I wonder if this is why I’ll see a post has a larger comment count than the comments I can read, too.

If you’ve blocked someone, that person’s comments and all comments replying to theirs are hidden from your view. This is my only guess why you might be seeing this. The comment count you see on your instance should be accurate, since it only counts comments it knows about and it doesn’t know about defederated ones.

  • Acclimatization is a whole thing. I remember thinking 65F / 18C was cold once upon a time, then I moved north and now only bother putting on a jacket if it’s below 40F / 5C or so (but now I start seriously suffering above 85F / 30 C where that used to be my ideal temp).

People who pretend certain temps are objectively not that cold or hot have never moved from one climate to another, I think. The person you replied to must be from a hot area.

  • Celcius really isn’t that hard to get used to if you stop getting hung up on conversions and just live in it for a while. Faherenheit also isn’t as hard to get used to as people meme it to be. It’s all about what you’ve spent a significant enough time in to get the data points for how stuff feels to you.

Either scale would be second nature to anyone after a year in a new home. I made the change np. I never do conversion math, I just know what it feels like outside and can ballpark the number I remember having a similar feeling in the other place. It’s really not a big deal and not worth all the internet yelling that goes on about it.

  • Stuart Fergus, the husband of James Bulger’s mother, said that after he reached out to one creator asking them to take down their video, he received a reply saying: “We do not intend to offend anyone. We only do these videos to make sure incidents will never happen again to anyone. Please continue to support and share my page to spread awareness.”

He really tried to take down his wife’s dead kid’s deepfake and got the creator responding “no offense, so like share and subscribe lel”

Using the likeness of another person without that person’s express permission should be a jailable offense.
