    In my experience, every crosspost should have the link on the top. That’s the actual crosspost link. The one in the body of the text is kinda a bonus one that can be deleted according to the poster’s preference. But you’re right, the one in the body is also a hard link (goes to home instance of post) while the one in the top is a relative link (goes to your home instance). So I guess if your instance doesn’t federate the community that the crosspost was originally from, then the top link might not show up? I don’t remember encountering that but I guess I wouldn’t necessarily have noticed.

    Can you provide an example of a crosspost that doesn’t show the link in the top part?

    Censorship is always going to exist to some extent, but Lemmy has the potential to balance it out because there is no central authority. So you could have censorship of different stuff on different servers, but if you take the network as a whole you would still get a diversity of information.

    I remember everybody celebrating Luigi the whole time, I guess some mods and admins were wary of threats of violence being hosted on their servers but overall it’s impossible to criticize Luigi on this platform without getting heavily downvoted, and celebrating him is free upvotes.

    So I feel like you’re being pretty overdramatic and also not really accurate with this comment.

    Regarding AskLemmy, it was because you were (allegedly) openly calling for violence. I don’t necessarily agree with that either but I can understand the rationale much more easily.

    There are some laws in the books where the instance could become open to legal liability if a Lemming actually did murder somebody and they traced back their activity on Lemmy and found similar comments. It seems ridiculous but that’s what admins sometimes worry about.

    According to some cursory reading, Section 230 of the US legal code provides near total immunity to providers, hosts, and moderators of illegal content. However, the statute is still subject to changing interpretations. More importantly, this wide ranging protection of free speech does not apply for most other countries’ legal systems. I believe lemmy.world is hosted somewhere in Europe, and they may be concerned that not removing explicit calls to violence could leave them open to legal retribution.

    It’s really not that hard to get your point across without crossing the line of actually calling for violence. You can express the most vitriolic opinions and hatred towards anyone you want and you’ll be legally protected, but once you cross that line towards direct threats on a specific individual, you’re exposing everyone on here to the threat of legal action. It’s not even like Lemmy instances can afford good lawyers, we would be fucked if anyone ever went after us for that.

    Huh, that is interesting.

    Definitely a long way to go, but getting better cross compatibility with Mastodon would be very beneficial because I feel like Mastodon users are fairly similar to Lemmy users in terms of attitudes and interests, and they have a huge active userbase compared to us.

    Aha, took me like 15 minutes to learn how to navigate that site (I never used Mastodon or Twitter) but I figured it out.

    This was the reply on Mastodon

    Federation between Mastodon and Lemmy is still very limited in functionality and weird. Obviously the image OP attached to the original post made it over, but the one they attached to their comment did not.

    The devs need to do a lot of work on that if it’s ever going to be usable by most people. But also users need to experience both sites for themselves to start to understand what the actual use cases for cross platform functionality are.

    I think I got a little better understanding of how it is to interact with a Lemmy community/thread from trying to find that user and his reply via the Mastodon interface. It’s pretty confusing tbh because there’s no threading at all, just random replies.

    But actually on further investigation there is a way to view the thread, I can kinda see it here

    Wtf clicking that link actually navigates me to this Lemmy thread on sh.itjust.works. Now I’m just more confused than ever.

    I’m guessing that it automatically navigates to Lemmy because my account comes from Lemmy. But you can find the Mastodon view of the same comment by manually navigating through Mastodon. Interestingly, the Mastodon view has the same problem where my embedded image doesn’t display. Definitely work to be done.
