They do the same thing building architects do. They draw pretty pictures of the end product that may of may not be structurally sound, then rely on engineers to build it and make sure it doesn’t collapse.

Individual voters tell their state how to cast the state vote. States vote to elect the president. Our States are more analagous to countries that are members of the EU than, say, the states in Mexico or provinces in Canada. (Not that I’m particularly educated on the government systems of the EU, Mexico, or Canada. If I made a bad comparison please feel free to correct me)

They are not vital. Almost no countries in the world practice trial by jury other than The US, the UK, Australia, Canada, and Ireland. The US is the only country in the world that uses trial by jury for civil cases.
The law is complex and nuanced. Most people lack the understanding and background to apply the law justly and uniformly. It is an antiquated idea that should go.
