Technology@lemmy.ml•Why does Asia seem to have a monopoly on chip design and production?
3·9 months agoIt’s really not just that it is/was cheaper. There are cases where, all costs considered, it was actually measurably more expensive. The main reason for off-shoring is purely ideological. Amercan capital has nothing but disdain for workers and hatred for organized labor. Off-shoring was intended to crush unions, while giving a temporarily lower price to goods to prevent the populace from understanding how much they were getting screwed.
Chip production is a highly specialized field, where workers could readily demand concessions from capital, were they on anything resembling stable ground. That was not too be allowed.

Programmer Humor@programming.dev•My skill prevents bugs, unlike your fancy compiler, peasant.
71·9 months agoIt is a way to go but there are still cons there. Guaranteeing memory safety isn’t free. You have to pay for it somewhere, either at compilation time, like Rust, or during runtime like in Go. Both are solid approaches but GC will cause problems in cases where the extra runtime overhead is not acceptable.
No. Conservatism has always only been about conserving aristocratic/oligarchic socio-economic power structures and establishing them where absent. Those are the only ideals they’ve ever had. All of the test was just a facade to pretend that their ideology has any place in a free, open, and equitable society.

Memes@lemmy.ml•liberals: CHINESE CENSORSHIP CHINA BAD
31·10 months agoAnother (mostly joking) suggestion: Create propaganda supporting use of free, [libre,] open-source software and esoteric operating systems (like Plan9). While this is not directly related to conventional nation-state-vs-nation-state or political-ideology-vs-political-ideology topics generally central to propaganda, it may encourage people to make the digital and physical world a stranger place.

Technically correct (still the best kind of correct). However, the meaning has changed a but due to the word’s falling into disuse. Colloquially, it is now used as a mid-point between overwhelmed and underwhelmed, describing a situation as a mundane experience. Not disappointing, too stimulating, or even satisfying; just neutral (“Tell my wife I said ‘Hello’”).
I was also making a timezone joke :D
Spain is in UTC or UTC+1. I’m on UTC-8. 11AM for Spain is 3AM for me, making it easy for me to have a not-too-crazy evening and still be in bed before 11AM UTC.
That’s really easy though. And without getting plastered. Just start at about 5 or 6 and have one drink an hour. Then, with a bit of self-control and go to bed before 1 in the morning and you’ve 2 hours to spare.
As someone with AuADHD, can confirm that parenthetical statements are likely an ADHD thing (I use a lot of them).

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What about the Big Beautiful Bill makes Republicans smile
65·11 months agoAnd there it is. You wanted the fascist to get elected.
Ah yes. “Equal opportunities” of the old days, like being told to be out of town by sunset or you’ll be lynched, or firing women who get pregnant, or redlining neighborhoods and adding restrictions too deeds to prevent the “wrong sort” of people (aka anyone not white) from moving in.
“DEI Ideology” is a made-up boogie man that the far-right created as an excuse to discriminate against minorities and their allies, since being outright racist isn’t acceptable anymore. White conservatives are terrified of meritocracy.
EDIT: In hindsight, this may have come across as an attack on the other commenter. That was not the intent, nor was the intent to accuse them of the horrific crimes of the past. These were used as used as examples of the reality experienced by minorities and women throughout US history, including the latter half of the 20th century to the present (to a lesser degree).

Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•This rich California city is losing its mind over a housing projectEnglish
4·11 months agoAssumed it was either there or Palo Alto.

In my experience often detriment. Most of the images for projects that I have been encountering as of late - hell, most Dockerfiles that I’ve been encountering - have hardware-specific config and packages. I just want a Dockerfile or maybe a docker-compose.yaml that is hardware neutral by default and doesn’t use the shitty throttled Dockerhub for its base image.
