A lot of the “automation” we can buy is a joke: it should be unobtrusive and provide actual quality of life improvement and it’s not. Turning on a light shouldn’t require us to interact with an app on our phones.
HA with some good hardware choices does that if you don’t mind putting in the work up front. Most of my automations require no interaction to work: they passively check conditions and trigger automatically – if I’m home, leaving, need to wake up for work, etc.
I work every 3rd day, so for an odd schedule it’s nice. I set up Home Assistant to look at my calendar.

Programmer Humor@programming.dev•What a joke, can't believe people still voluntarily use this OS
3·4 months agoWe use Windows 11 at work. One of the desktops has an error where you can log in but windows displays a notification to the effect of “You’re not logged in, your settings and app preference aren’t available.”
Other than Edge most of the built in programs don’t work. No errors, no notifications – clicking the icon to open them does nothing. Notepad, file explorer, etc.
I wonder how many people don’t realize thermal throttling is likely contributor to their old laptop slowing down.
The occasionally blast of compressed air and replacing the 6 year old dried out thermal paste does wonders.

5·4 months agoI was convinced I wanted to go into a science or engineering from childhood through my early 20s.
Mid 20s was a complete turnaround for me, and I’m a firefighter/medic now. There’s a lot about the job that sucks: but the pay and benefits are decent enough and I’m (mostly) actually helping people without making some sociopath billionaire even richer.

Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•I just went onto reddit to a intrest subreddit which happens to be NSFW and i got this, fuck reddit im glad i quit it.English
1·10 months agoI deleted my Reddit account but still follow some writers on it and had the same issue. The worst part is it’s anything marked as NSFW – even posts that were tagged as a joke weren’t accessible.
I changed my VPN to another country and Reddit was still asking me to log in and show ID until I cleared my cookies and cache.

We often forget some people do have lives before they “settle down” and get married.
There is a male loneliness problem. The meme is making fun of the toxic dickheads that are part of the problem and lack the self awareness to realize it.

51·1 year agoI flew from Jermany to Tanzania and saw some jeriatric jiraffes.
I say it “Jif” because:
- That’s what the format’s creator named it.
- It’s weird, but “soft G” is a thing and acronyms and the only “rule” for pronouncing acronyms is “it’s easy to say”.
- It annoys people that are way too invested in it. Sure, it’s immature – but it’s low stakes and not particularly “shitty”. I enjoy it and you only YOLO once.
