What amazes me is that we pretty much are converting, just very slowly, one thing at a time. In school we all learn the metric system, and it’s used all over in industry and government. At the supermarket, everything is labeled in both systems, and some things have started trending towards metric as the default. We are all used to the 2L bottle size. The old fifth of a gallon bottle, though some still call it that, has been replaced by the 750ml bottle. More recently the 20oz bottle has been phased into the .5L, mainly–I’m sure–to shrink the amount while keeping prices the same, but still it’s progress in this regard.

I think the transformation will be effectively complete when highway signs use kilometers. But I don’t see that happening any time soon.

It’s not just about treating current employees well. It’s also about offering enough at the hiring stage to attract more good workers. More and more I feel it’s best to think of software as existing in a quantum state of all possible feature/bug combinations. Between updates that can occur on any facet of the software’s intricacies, algorithm quirks, human interventions, and clandestine beta testing on unsuspecting groups of users, who the fuck knows.

A good suggestion. I’m already trying to post less, comment less, and just focus on making better, more frequently positive contributions.

Back when I started with Reddit I remember sorting by new and thinking, jeez why would anyone sift through all this crap… Cut to me exclusively sorting by new all the time because I looked at ev.ry.thing. So yeah, this is nice. Though in the future it may be just as full. Cross that bridge when we come to it I guess.
