Specifically, free software means users have the four essential freedoms: (0) to run the program, (1) to study and change the program in source code form, (2) to redistribute exact copies, and (3) to distribute modified versions.
Agree. Not sure if I’d use the word “tool” to describe him… But he’s certainly “special”. Glad I found one of the few discussions where it’s not just his fans praising him for his " visions" despite him not delivering on the last 50 promises he made. Or the latest edgy memelord thing he read somewhere or came up with… Usually I just shut my mouth and don’t comment on that because it’s just so many people following the hype.
No? I left out the detailed info here as I thought it’s of no concern. I provided it with pretty much the same info I’d write to the Linux Kernel Mailing List. With computer bugs that’s usually steps to reproduce the issue, exact versions of everything, exact error messages and my findings from googling and looking at the code…
That was one of the issues I had that only gave me one or two search results and it’s unlikely that someone comes up with a solution since the hardware is outdated and not many people have that specific board lying around and also the expertise to understand the low level hardware coding involved.
I mean it kind of fits the rest of the picture I have from using ChatGPT and similar stuff. It can do easy stuff. And write boilerplate code pretty alright. With the Arduino code I’m tinkering around as a hobby… not so much. I once asked it to do the inverse kinematics for a small robotics project. And the AI can tell me about what I just read on the Wikipedia article about that topic. But that’s it. Not an idea how to apply that info. And that the complicated part is to come up with the specific Jacobian matrix. And not just tell me that using one is one of the few approaches to that problem. That’s obvious from reading the Wikipedia article or reading any textbook. And it did silly things like write code like equation.solve(parameter1, parameter2, parameter3) … Sure. I mean if I already had a framework that did that and was available on an embedded platform, I wouldn’t have had that problem in the first place…
So my attempts at using AI for the issues I have with computers regularly fail. I can see how that’s not the experience everyone has, but still… It doesn’t really help me with specific problems or rare issues.
And I still have a few I can try to question some AI about… An slow Wireguard VPN tunnel inside if another tunnel that I already fixed the MTU and it’s still unbearably slow… A few obscure webframeworks that don’t tie into things… But I’m pretty sure I’ll get the same results.
Have you ever been lucky with AI and issues that didn’t get you any search results because no one ever did it before? I mean I’d be happy to learn how to use AI properly as a tool. It’s just I’ve tried and I don’t think I’m too stupid to prompt it. It’s just that I’ve given up since it doesn’t seem nowhere near intelligent enough to tackle the real issues I have. I’m not opposed to AI. I use it and it helps me get small stuff done easier/faster.
I’ve tried. And usually the questions I ask are too specific. I mean I can answer the basic questions myself and often I get several result when it’s just that. The AI just mumbles general advice and is always wrong if it’s too specific. Like for example: Why does the graphics driver crap out on any OpenGL ES instruction on the old single board computer I have lying around, despite the SoC being supported?
I don’t get it. Where does he say “algorithm”? Does Google Gemini do PAC learning?
AFAIK “AI” means “machine learning” and machines with “intelligent” behaviour, whatever that means. It includes everything from expert systems, statistics, markov chains to LLMs. And people nowadays slap it on every product out there.
“Algorithm” means a (finite) sequence of (rigorous) instructions. At least that’s what Wikipedia says. It’s well defined and doesn’t talk about where the instructions come from or if it includes statistics.
And one of them is Java?

3·10 months agoI think you’re completely right with that assessment. Journalist used to be a reputable profession. And explaining things and processing raw information into something that can be consumed by the reader, deemed important. Especially getting it right. There is a whole process to it if you do it professionally. And curating content and deciding what is significant and gets an audience is equally as important.
Doing away with all of that is like replacing your New York Times with your 5-year-old and whatever she took from watching the news.

It’s not square, though, but cubed. x^2 looks very different. And 2 isn’t an odd number (see title.)
But if the lower diagram was x^2 (and the axis were labelled correctly) I’d say that’s a proper joke 😃
The axis aren’t labeled properly. That’s likely why we can’t make sense of the diagrams.
Everyone elses life oscillates over time between positive and negative… OP’s life’s Y is X cubed. And it somehow contains big blue dots on the whole numbers… They consider that odd. And I’d agree.
Uh yeah, I’m not sure. I’ve tried summarizing with AI tools. And there is the bot here on Lemmy that summarizes stuff… I never liked any of that. It’s really a mixed bag, from pretty okay summaries to entirely missing the point of the original article to bordering on false information. I think we’re far from there yet. However, it’s a common use-case for AI. Maybe in 1-2 years I can stop being afraid of misinformation being fed to me. Currently, I think the incorrectness of the information still outweighs any potential benefit. The more complicated it gets, thus making you in need of a summary in the first place, the more biased and skewed the results get. So I don’t see that happen in the very near future. But we definitely should keep up doing the research and pushing that.
Tagging and organizing is something I’d like an AI for.
I’m somewhat fine with that. But you absolutely have to tell people to keep the discussions to random chatter and the absolute minimum then. (And internal talk maybe, if that’s of no interest to the public. Once it gets important or someone asks for advice that could be beneficial to others, the discussion on Discord needs to be interrupted and switch platforms. Or be copied to a Wiki after the fact.
The most important downside for me is: I’m looking for some information about an issue I’m having or how to install or configure something and I find none. Because all the people talk behind closed doors and googling etc doesn’t help any more. Only solution is to join every Discord and platform before you start using your software and scrolling trough pages of chat messages.
I’d rather google for an error message and then be directed directly to an issue tracker where people discussed that specific problem.
That is a reddit mindset. I don’t think it works that way here. Comments usually get only a few votes on Lemmy and I don’t think many people chose this platform for the upvotes. That specific post got 0 upvotes and 1 downvote (given my instance fixed federation and the numbers are correct now.) I don’t want to get on your nerves too much. Just explain my perspective. Religious people are super loud. They want to dictate how I live, if I can marry someone if I’m gay, oppress women, oppress minorities and they wage war all around the world. Have done so for centuries, and continue to do so. I feel entitled to call out their BS as long as they try to make everyone’s life worse. I promise to stop in the exact moment they refrain from politics, violence and stop telling me and my surroundings how to live our lives. You can’t just do all of that and then expect the other side to stay silent.
I’m sorry. I don’t think this is a “Reddit thing”. I’ve been here longer than I’ve been on Reddit. I agree that we have the same dynamics here, that people often are incentivized to reply with negative comments. But this is a community with “Humor” in the name. And edgy humor is part of the discussion. And where I’m from, being an atheist is fairly common. I still think if you were able to tell facts from fiction, you wouldn’t be religious in the first place and mixing both terms in one sentence is kind of an oxymoron. So I think it’s more that both the audience on Reddit and on Lemmy is quite diverse. And we both have different perspectives on life, probably also are part of different cultures and maybe have a different take on humor and which things to scroll past and which things to reply to.
Isn’t the story, nobody came up with a good name for the company and Steve Jobs said you have x days to come up with a name I like, or I just call it Apple? And they didn’t?
Make it 63 (31?) to align with what C99 can distinguish.
Also: I really like unicode in identifiers. So if at all possible don’t just have a random string of letters and numbers, make sure to include greek letters and all the funny emojis. (I just forgot which languages and compilers etc allow that.)
