  • Hey, I was working on the same problem the other day and maybe you can help me with it a bit further. If you don’t mind.

    I like to run gotop on my second monitor so I can watch my system resources, and normally I just open a terminal window and type gotop and it runs and stays open and continually updates. I’ve made this command into a shell script to run at startup. Using this script presumably halfway works, because a terminal window shows up, but it tells me “the child process exited normally with status 127.” and prompts for relaunch (which does nothing except present the same message again).

    Now the internet tells me that 127 generally means “command not found” which doesn’t really make sense to me because gotop is in my PATH and can be run normally without any kind of special arguments or location if I pop open a terminal and do it myself. So I’m not really sure where the problem lies. The script in question is currently parked on my desktop and when I run it manually, when logged in and everything, nothing changes except that I also get an additional terminal window that states the child process exited normally with status 0.

    I’m brand new to both Linux and shell scripting so I barely have any idea what I’m doing here, I’ve gathered through individual research that I should also have a line starting the file with #! /bin/bash but I’m not actually even too confident about that part. Currently the entire script reads as follows:

    #! /bin/bash gnome-terminal -- sh -c gotop

    I’ve tried with and without quotes on gotop and I’ve tried with and without the hashbang and none of the four options have given me different results, which makes me think I’m barking at the wrong tree. I have made the script executable so I don’t think that’s the problem.

    O wise one, please bestow upon the poor noob your knowledge. (This request is also open to other wise ones who may be passing by.)

  • Essentially yes. The ethical thing to do with that amount of money is to redistribute it to people that need it more. Whether that is by donation to charity, or raising wages and investing in worker protections in the company that you run, or funding schools and development in places that need them, or paying your fair share of taxes, emphasis here because most billionaires got that way by lobbying tax code in their favor - they’ve reached a level of net worth that genuinely boggles the mind and couldn’t be wasted in full in a dozen lifetimes if you tried to.

    I’m fine with people being wealthy, keep a million in your bank account, hell keep ten million, I don’t care. But there needs to be a line somewhere. There needs to be a point where we can say, okay, well done, you have Won At Capitalism. Here is your medal. All further profits are taxed at 99% income. We cannot let individuals amass so much of the supply of money that the nation can no longer support itself, which is what’s happening. Money is the life blood of society and all that blood is being concentrated in particular spots, starving the rest of the body. Money needs to flow to create a healthy economy, but it’s stagnating.

  • I don’t know where that Manson rumor started but I do know that every single kid in my middle school all wanted to talk about it all the time. This was my first experience with being over saturated with a meme nearly to the point of physical violence. Absolutely no one would shut the fuck up about it ever and me not wanting to hear about it anymore made me the weird one.

    How is it that you, me, everybody, everybody’s cousin, and also the FBI were all fully aware that Trump & Co were guaranteed going to try and cheat the election, and yet the first moment all the republican electors come out and say “Yep Trump wins!! We promise!!” everyone is just accepting this as fact?

    I have severe doubts about the validity of these numbers for at least the next several weeks. Republicans have proven repeatedly that they are not going to play fair in any fashion. I don’t believe a damn thing they tell me without receipts for it and we’ve got until January to produce the receipts.
