They were doing a pretty good job of going unnoticed until Pippin dropped stuff down the well.

Might have made it over the bridge without getting attacked at all.

The bucket falling is what disturbed the gobbos who in turn woke Durin’s Bane. That or the bucket straight up woke the balrog. It’s not entirely clear but Pippin is for sure responsible.
