Violent crime fell sharply across the largest U.S. cities in early 2026, extending a nationwide decline that began after the pandemic-era crime spike.
The declines show up across every major region, suggesting a systemic, nationwide trend.
Homicides dropped 17.7%.
Robberies fell 20.4%.
Rapes declined 7.2%.
Aggravated assaults decreased 4.8%.
Or is it similar to covid, where Trump simply stopped counting properly? And nobody bothers reporting anymore because Trump will release them anyway
Survey of 67 of the nation’s largest police departments
Crime stats are always kind of fraught, kind of untrustworthy, because the authorities have so much influence over what crimes are reported, recorded, counted. That influence works in ways that are obvious (cops persuading victims that reports are a waste of time) and in ways that are less obvious. It wouldn’t surprise me to hear that all of the ways are happening pretty hard in this political moment, in the wake of so much illegal ICE activity.
When the people see that the cops can’t be trusted, the people avoid talking to the cops. They report fewer crimes, they help solve fewer crimes.
Baltimore’s comeback has been phenomenal. Decades of an (admittedly deserved) reputation as a shitty crime infested city have made people and the media turn a blind eye to the massive strides they have taken in recent years. It’s seriously like a whole new city. It’s also not getting talked about a lot because a lot of their success has come from their mayor enacting a lot of socialist policies, and we can’t have the public knowing things like that are a viable solution for reducing things like crime, drug use, and homelessness.
Seriously, Baltimore is a hidden gem these days. It’s a city that’s seeing massive success and regrowth. The whole place just feels alive. Obviously, there are still some areas that are problematic, just like any major city; but the streets are now cleaner and safer than most cities it’s size, especially in the US. On the one hand, I wish more people were talking about it, because it is one hell of a success story. On the other, I also kinda hope it keeps getting ignored because I don’t want people to flock to it.
Plus MD DEATHFEST next week!
thats whats up, ive seen some awesome metal shows in Baltimore back in the day
A few years ago I saw an interesting video that did a look into the correlation between crime and lead levels across the country. They stated in no way is this proven and to take the information provided as a possibility to whats happening now, but it did seem to have some cool points that seemed to make sense. Lead accumulation stays with us for life and even passes on to the next generation. The biggest cause started out in the early 1900s and became a huge problem when cars took over and gas was leaded. The crazy part more than anything is that we knew pretty fast that leaded gas was awful for us yet wasnt fully banned until 1996! There was a lot more to it so check it out, but basically they did some data analysis which shows the connection of crime rates which lined up perfectly with lead rates and now that were finally on the downtrend of lead exposure we are also seeing crime match that as well.
Found it https://youtu.be/vm_1XLKtGpI
And I’m sure trump will be there to take the honors for all of this, even though he fought tooth and nail for it not to happen
There is so much crime going on at the White House, there has to be a balance.
Damn Millennials killing the Crime Industry.
Nobody can afford guns anymore
I remember reading the same headline for Seattle a while ago and then the next day were headlines about how violent crime in the county and neighboring cities has skyrocketed. Also that less people trust the police or are unable to report the crimes. Then there was another about how federal funding for databases were being cut so even less crimes were being submitted.
But yay! Blue cities, no crime! Gentrification is working as expected.
Edit: oh and I forgot there was another headline about how because these stats show less violent crimes the SPD made some moves to cut the civilian crisis prevention team. Shortly after SPD officer involved shootings went up 🫠
Not counting the ones perpetrated by ICE thugs, I imagine?
If it’s governement mandated it’s not a crime, obviously.
Yeah, a whole lot of violent racists applied for ICE jobs that were notoriously lax on hiring criteria.
I wonder if there’s any link between those factors that may also correlate some violent racists being legally allowed to beat and shoot people they don’t like, so they can fill their urges without ‘doing crime’ now.
I’d bet money that we soon hear about serial killer whi worked at ICE, and I’ll bet at least one is active right now. If I had this idea, a real killer will certainly thought of it…
Its not a crime when cops do it. Do you even america?do you even state!?
😐
- Data show many urban areas have become significantly safer over the last two years, with drops beginning in the second half of the Biden presidency and continuing under Trump.
Article says the current decline in violence started during Biden’s tenure and the trend continues in Trump’s tenure.
Crime rates are complicated and there will need to be a lot more analysis before anyone should say it was due to some specific politician or policy, but I suspect that regardless of that, we won’t hear the end of this from certain politicians and propagandists for some time.
It also says in the “first quarter of 2026”. Oh, you mean the quarter with two absolutely brutal winter storms and an extended period of freezing cold? Gee, I wonder why crime dropped …
No statistics provided by any part of any government in the USA are reliable, and should not be believed in any context.
Conservatives generally seek to make US cities look like crime ridden hell holes because they’re run by Democrats.
Exactly - no USA stats are trustworthy in any context.
No worries then because the Major Cities Chiefs Association collected and reported these and is not a part of the government.
Sowing further distrust in the government and institutions helps no one but the enemies of Western democracies.
The US is not a Western democracy anymore.
Blame those responsible for gutting the government and institutions, not those who recognize the damage done. This administration has done everything possible to destroy science, hide numbers, and replace objective fact with executive decree.
Someday we might again be able to trust those institutions, but it’s going to take a really long time to fix.
The US is the enemy of western democracies.
What a shit statistical bias to only graph the cities it decreased the most, making it look like a much greater drop in crime than it was. There are many cities where violent crime went up. Yes, overall stats suggest in the US (AND Canada) violent crime decreased. Also, this is not the final report and only preliminary data.
Two things. First, it lists the overall averages in the portion of the article posted. Second, it is important to reinforce the narrative around specific cities; Trump has repeatedly claimed that some of the cities on this list have “out of control crime,” and threatened federal intervention.
