Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•How do you vet open source software if you don't know code well?
6·1 day agoIn theory yes. But as an insider to a company that sells proprietary software…also no. LOL.
They build a lot of their stuff on top of opensource code. There has been the exact same exploits as open source projects, and even a few malware intrusions from either some devs deliberate sabotage or infected machine. Not every giant corporation is checking in depth like you assume they should be, they go on trust to save shareholder profits and if they do an external audit and its a zero day nobody* is catching it.
*there was that one a while back in an unrelated project where the only reason it was caught was a dev nerd noticed the very slight delay in network response compared to previous version. So caught by human feels wrong and not a diff of git

Memes@lemmy.ml•One of these is an authoritarian imperialist empire, the other is China
116·2 days agoIt is not an insult, it is fact. You are spouting rhetoric without actually thinking about what you relay. CIA tries over a small period in an experiment, bad results.
But Dude look up cults and how their leaders get them to do things like drink poison or murder for them. Or have a extreme group suicide bomb themselves. Indoctrination.
If you raise a kid and tell him everyday that black people are bad, they believe it and perpetuate it. Indoctrination.
You are being what the rest of the world criticizes China for doing to its citizens. Being single minded with out a way to see past the delusions, and regurgitate random info without actually disseminating the root of things.
Again, you thinking being paid or not doesn’t change the merit , it absolutely does.
Just like when red state newspapers report on news: they have to slant it to favour the payer or you don’t get paid. It’s how control works.
If you don’t see this, then that is highly unfortunate that you can’t see the truth.

116·2 days agoBrainwashing by some pseudo mind control is not how it works, its indoctrination by rote. Same as cults or religious faith. There core belief is altered to somebody elses way.
Of course if you were paid it would change the merit.
You seriously don’t seem to understand critical thinking. And this is a waste of time
Have a good evening.

Memes@lemmy.ml•One of these is an authoritarian imperialist empire, the other is China
218·2 days agoChinese citizens have to tow the line. The company I worked for had operations there, when our guys meet with counterparts then and ask probing questions everyone clams up, and one off to the side says we can’t talk about bad things.
If you go against it you have reprogramming training classes.
We even have Chinese police stations here in Canada and they go knocking on doors because a Chinese citizen has said something negative about the homeland. And coerce them into going back to the mainland. This is not me reading it on the web, this is coworkers at the house when it happens to their room mates.
Stop trying to make China a utopia it is not. I agree with Socialism, but not a dictatorship.
It woukd seem you are being paid to promote China propaganda, or you are severely deluded to what goes on there.
A survey of citizens that know they cannot speak ll without retribution to them or their family, will always look positive. Please use some critical thinking here.

218·2 days agoFrom ex pats of China, they disagree with you that there is huge rates of satisfaction or “democracy”.
You are trying to paint a pleasant picture on the web, but people who have left it disagree with you.

Memes@lemmy.ml•One of these is an authoritarian imperialist empire, the other is China
221·2 days agoI just don’t want to confuse capitalism vs socialism, with Global Domination strategy of USA or China.
They are “socialist” but they aren’t doing it out of the idea of greater good of all humankind, they are a dictatorship (currently) and this is self interest so they can be a global logistic player and their port building also includes military access. This is a longterm goal to be the only superpower.

Memes@lemmy.ml•One of these is an authoritarian imperialist empire, the other is China
424·2 days agoThere’s lots of other links that discount your denial of their plans and how they leverage. USA is like 5 year plan, 10 year plan. China has 100 year plan and 1000 year plan.

Memes@lemmy.ml•One of these is an authoritarian imperialist empire, the other is China
524·2 days agoWhile it does have benefits, the overarching Chinese plan is to own everything, and have countries on the debt hook.
USA is the world bully by might, China does it by strategy
If the outlook is I spend too much on my wife and kids then you shouldn’t be married with kids.
Once kids are self sufficient then you will have more than enough to waste on consumerism.

linuxmemes@lemmy.world•Guys, what's the best Linux distro to install on my PC?
2·5 days agoDistro can alter how it behaves on your hardware. I tried every Debian derivative out there on a 2010 laptop. They would fail install or fail boot due to some hardware error, but fedora or opensuse were fine, and weirdly nixos. All those acknowledged the error and worked around it.
Also, not sure if other distros are this easy (because I didn’t experiment) but opensuse let’s you install as many DEs as you like with their pattern selections, and you can flipflop between them at the login screen.
I thought that was a good tool for a beginner just wanting to try out each DE without reinstalling as you change your mind.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Why do schools look like prisons and are there any countries where they don't?
1·5 days agoI have heard that the fims employed to design a school are often the same ones that do prisons, maybe because it has to deal with the same requirements. Lots of people, shower and toilet facilities, revocable access areas.
The last 10-15 years in Western Canada though they have empoyed some stylish modern designs. In some cases too modern. Some looked amazing, lots of light, high ceilings, natural elements, etc but the architects forgot teachers need to store a lot of materials and the classroom had zero storage areas, as did rest of school. They ended up using the theatre stage as a storage zone. Which had to be cleared out for plays.

2·6 days agoThanks, wireguard was pretty easy to setup, just time consuming mapping the devices and keys between devices. But now that stage is over its all good

That is a lot. Does Ubuntu have patch listing? With zypper on openSUSE it can list you security patches and their status of critical, recommended, not needed etc and you can just update patches and not every update to the repo.
