I had my conspiracy theory ex brother in law explain that chem trails were things Biden added to jets to fight global warming… My response was “shit, I wish that was true!”
Somehow that wasn’t the answer he was expecting.

No, no they didn’t. I’ve been through a number Republican presidents… Well 3 others … And not one of them was said to be a threat to democracy, not one of them was said to be a threat to the rule of law, and not one of them was it questioned whether they would leave office if they lost election.
It is a bullshit statement to say Trump is a standard Republican and what Democrats are saying is just hyperbole, and this is what they always say. The only way you can possibly think this is if you’ve only been exposed to Trump presidencies.
100%. This is the true “voter fraud” if there is any. Voting for parents, voting for significant others, voting for kids, but doing so on a mail in ballot and usually with their approval.
(I have to admit that I do this with my wife. She says “just fill it out and I’ll sign and turn it in”, so I do. But this could easily be done with coercion also.)
Yeah, I 100% agree about the chivalry and dating. And as soon as you say the woman is as strong as me (from a competence, intellect, and emotional standpoint) and is an equal partner in a relationship, a lot of the chivalry stuff doesn’t make sense.
Hey, you do you. I have no problem with it if it comes naturally. But any sort of expectation here just gives me the cringe-shivers. If the woman expects someone to open the door for her, yikes! If the man expects that he’s the one to open the car door for the woman, yikes! And the basis of this thread seemed to be more around a woman expecting to have the car door opened for her which is why I wrote what I wrote.
I always found the concept of a man opening a car door for a woman exceptionally insulting to women. I’ll open doors for people when I’m walking with them, man or woman, but running ahead of a woman to open the car door for them is cringeworthy * 10. I get second-hand embarrassment shivers just thinking about doing it on a first date.
I like strong, independent, and capable women who are perfectly able to open car doors for themselves. Women who can hold their own in a conversation, are comfortable splitting a check, who are smart and educated, and who don’t need to me protect them like they are delicate flowers. I have never been with or talked with a woman in my social group (that I know of) who expected a man to open a car door for them.

I think I’m lucky, but I also have both. I enjoy what I do and I make good money. They still have to pay me to do it, I wouldn’t do it for free, but overall I love it.
(Engineering manager for R&D at a small / mid-sized company)

It’s really looking at a delayed gratification scenario. You hate working but make good money and then eventually you enjoy having money. In the end, it can be a lot of suffering for the long term money.
Why do you assume everyone on this site is exactly the same? Is it that hard to grasp that there’s a spectrum of people who are at different stages in their lives with different amounts of money?
Also, how much do you think this cost? A bus billboard goes for what, $300-500 a month? Is it that crazy to imagine there are people here that don’t have that much free money?
Holy crap, this meme is on point! Both in the Indy movie grab and the base message.

I get the anti Boomer sentiment, but the reality is many of them are very decent people.
My dad passed this year and now it’s just my mom left. She has a net with of about 2M. I’m doing just fine myself, And she gets by on about 70k a year (half of that goes to rent). I keep telling her she should spend more money on things that make her happy, but she’s good with what she has and doesn’t feel she needs more. She doesn’t want to travel and she has everything she needs.
Just because the boomer generation has left us with a dumpster fire, doesn’t mean that there isn’t a wide distribution of people within that age group. The truth is only a handful of us have the power to change anything and the rest of us are just trying to get by and get the most out of life that we can.

It was the boombox outside her window that got her, wasn’t it? /s

The ones that really get me are the way they show execs at companies. The “look, this character is so bad ass at being an exec!”. They always come off as so unrealistic and cringy.
I’ve swam in that ocean, and that’s not how that shit works. Engineering too. In reality, it’s always a team of engineers that get something done… It is NEVER some rich smart guy inventing stuff on his or her own in their super fancy workshop.
If you say so. I can’t say I’ve ever run across one accidentally though.
The script doesn’t go away when you replace a helpdesk operator with ChatGPT. You just get a script-reading interface without empathy and a severally hindered ability to process novel issues outside it’s protocol.
The humans you speak to could do exactly what you’re asking for, if the business did not handcuff them to a script.
But they do handcuff them to a script… at least 1st and 2nd level tech support. That’s the point. It’s so fucking awful. It’s a barrier to keep you from the more highly paid tech support people who may actually be able to answer your questions. First you have to wait on hold to make sure you think it’s worth wasting their time on your annoying problem, THEN it’s a maze you have to navigate, and then whoops you just got hung up on… so sorry, start all over! LLMs are (can be) so much better at this!
I understand their limitations, but you’re overselling the negative. They’re fucking awesome for what they can do, but they have drawbacks that you must be aware of. Just as it’s lame to be an AI fanboi, it’s equally lame to be an AI luddite.
That’s 99% of what I’m looking for. If I’m figuring something out by myself, I’m not looking it up on the internet.
I’m an engineer and I’ve found LLMs great for helping me understand an issue. When you read something online, you have to translate from what the author is saying into your thinking and I’ve found LLMs are much better at re-framing information to match my inner dialog. I often find them much more useful than google searches in trying to find information.
I already use LLMs to problem solve issues that I’m having and they’re typically better than me punching questions into Google. I admit that I’ve once had an llm hallucinate while it was trying to solve a problem for me, but the vast majority of the time it has been quite helpful. That’s been my experience at least. YMMV.
If you think LLMs suck, I’m guessing you haven’t actually used telephone tech support in the past 10 years. That’s a version of hell I wish on very few people.
I honestly don’t get how he lived this long. It was so obvious that he and Bush lied us into the war in Iraq. If my son or daughter was killed over there or massively injured, I would have made it my mission to kill the guys who lied and profited off of it. I’m not advocating for that, it just seems a logical consequence of those actions.
Somewhere between half a million people and 5 million people died as a consequence of that lie and the invasion. Cheney is a piece of shit and there is a lake of blood that this guy is responsible for. I only wish there was a hell for him to go to.
