It only needs to know how to run a program for 30 min, or activate with a delayed start in 5h. Clock time is meaningless for an oven.
Appliance companies, are you listening? Hint: they’re not, circuitry design and manufacture has been outsourced so much they probably don’t even know where they get it from.

Look I wasn’t completely serious about it, there’s no way to actually calculate something like that.
For example what’s the fraction of people that find me attractive. It could range from 0.05 to 0.5. I have no way of knowing.
I did a calculation once about my chances of finding a compatible long-term partner, inspired by the Drake Equation and using many many assumptions. The numbers are not good: ~22 out of 8 billion.

I definitely bought a lot of things because of ads. Not directly though, I don’t go around clicking on online ads even if one slips through the blocker.
Just being exposed to the idea that some product exists is an ad. Reviews and comparisons. Seeing a brand name in the wild. A product being recommended by someone I consider an authority in that specific field.
It all provenly works on me.
And I don’t really regret it, how else would I even find out what exists? Go to the store and just buy whatever the seller recommends? Did people do that in the past before mass advertising?
Edit: I just realized this is exactly what Amazon is trying to do. Push generic “amazon option” products which have no independent sales outside of the platform.

I hear this criticism all the time, but I’ve never seen it happen in 5 companies I’ve worked for so far. Usually there’s an understanding that estimates are wild guessing, and things are planned using dependencies rather than timeliness.
