Well… technically speaking: Isn’t “whining about politics” still “politics”?

If we follow that rabbit hole, OP has contributed to the exact issue they are ranting about.

Does your instance federate with Hexbear and Lemmygrad? Because I constantly have those people in my feed and it’s absolutely exhausting. I see more memes about burning the rich and starting a revolution than normal memes in my feed. I’m left-wing, but I’m not looking at memes to constantly be confronted with politics. Unfortunately instance blocking isn’t working well for me yet

Hi, you can take action by blocking the most prolific communities - there aren’t that many in either instance that are high volume.

There are also instances that don’t federate with either.

People in the instance have more varying viewpoints since its oriented towards a niche/content category (+ same is true for other niche instances). People interacting in the instance can be managed but its difficult for people interacting outside to be moderated to make sure theyre actually following our rules since admins dont get reports of people in their instance being reported, only the instances of where they interact in do.

Politics communities (aka communities that only talk about politics rather than something like a hobby (and lgbtq+ isnt politics)) are now hidden by default on the instance though hence why you probably havent noticed the two are federated still since people dont stumble in and need to explicitly choose to see the content (leading to less people arguing on different politics communities since they just sub to the one they want and then sees that one as normal)

Make your own instance with the politics you want.

There is no such thing as non-political spaces, only spaces where everyone has pre-agreed on what politics are acceptable.

I am wary of people using an unspecified “politics tho” like this. More than once the “”“PoLiTiCs”“” they meant were LGBTQIA+ people simply existing.

If there are two or more people, there are politics. I agree with the idea that people who decry ‘politics’ often have disgusting ideas and beliefs. Its a malignant form of privilege to pretend to be able to ignore politics. It’s either that or they are just a little dim and don’t feel they can keep up in a conversation.

What people that complain about politics generally mean is “politics that they notice that make them uncomfortable.”

Tell me how it’s “suspicious” to not want to read a post about Starfield, and have the comments be filled about politics because the game allows you to pick between he/him, she/her, and they/them?

I think it’s the world that’s been taken over, not by politics, but by a series of rich bastards not being held accountable for the crimes against society they’re regularly committing.

But either way I’d be MUCH happier to wish for all the porn to be removed from my feed when I dont even follow a single porn based sub. Or at the very least make sure it’s blurred.

To be honest, due to how this thread turned out, I’m not even able to distinguish if this is serious or sarcasm

Just to clarify, my general point, I am in no way against discussing politics. Be it in the political communities, or with the occasional meme. I fully realize the potential that memes have for initiating or reflecting on political discussion.

My point here is that I have a strong feeling that the comment section of seemingly non-divisive posts I’ve also fallen prey to the BuT eVeRyThInG iS PoLiTiCs hardliners. I fully realize that many, many topics can be seen as politically divisive, even if I don’t feel so myself. But I would like to make two points about this:

      1. And some posts, I get the feeling that the political discussion has absolutely nothing to do with the post body itself. It could be a picture of a beautiful sunrise, and someone suddenly starts talking about some American politician, and about how if it was up to that politician, we would never have sunrises again or something.

      2. Secondly, but very importantly: the level tends to be very low. People don’t know once we articulate their political opinion or reaction to another person’s political opinion, but it turns into this food fight-grade yes/no, strawman, whataboutism, etc. etc. It is my personal opinion that this takes away from most users lemmy experience, it does from mine anyway.

I downvote whenever I see them, but it seems like there are more, or a loud few (maybe both), for every one of my downvotes. It’s not just here, it seems like this on /all too. To be more specific, it seems there are more trolls constantly watching and quicker on the keyboard for anything remotely political. It sucks that we need moderation in any capacity to enforce no politics on ‘no politics’ spaces…
